It looks like Mississauga’s once spartan ramen scene is exploding. Recently, Sansotei Ramen opened its doors in Square One--making City Centre a new mecca for ramen. Sansotei, which currently operates locations in Toronto, North York, Markham, Ottawa and Richmond Hill, is known for both the long lineups it tends to generate and its small but satisfying menu. Some soups on the menu include tonkotsu ramen, tonkotsu black ramen, miso black ramen, shoyu ramen, spicy tan tan ramen and tomato ramen. According to Sansotei’s website, the resto’s ramen broth is freshly made everyday with pork bone. Diners can also choose thick or thin noodles and add extra toppings (think chashu, eggs, mushrooms, green onion and more) for an additional charge.
Nomad's Restobar is another Toronto joint that just expanded into our neck of the woods—and its second location is happily situated in Port Credit. The family-owned establishment, which opened just west of Hurontario on Lakeshore Blvd., also operates a location on the Danforth. According to the resto’s website, head chef David (also known as “Chile”) has been a Red Seal chef for well over a decade and created a menu dedicated to “Global Inspirations--Local Creations.” As far as the menu goes, the resto offers cheese and charcuterie boards, a globally-inspired Wanderlust platter, Kalbi short ribs, a satay platter, ceviche, tacos, sushi, jerk-style wings, chana masala, chimichanga, chicken and waffles, shrimp fried rice and more.
The Clarkson Mediterranean Bistro is a gem of a find in a small and quaint neighbourhood located west of Port Credit in a community called Clarkson Village. The Clarkson Mediterranean Bistro is a restaurant that’s now on my list of go-to places to dine in Mississauga. I had driven by it many times and had it on my list for months - I just wish I had gone sooner. I was floored by the level of service, the flavours, the quality of the food and the affordable pricing. This resto is a prime example of the benefits of supporting local restaurants over the big chains. We tried the California Chicken Risotto includes roasted tomatoes, zucchini and artichokes in a chardonnay and parmesan rose sauce. Risotto can be a heavy dish; however the flavours were on point and balanced with just enough acidity, resulting in a light, creamy and appetizing dish. The rice to ingredient ratio was perfect with substantial chicken, artichoke and zucchini pieces embedded in the silky risotto.
This is a hidden gem in Mississauga. Their menu is full of amazing options ranging from the famous Colombian platter, the bandeja paisa, to empanadas, patacons, arepas, and so much more. One thing I’ve learned about South American cuisine is that they know how to make a delectable beef tongue! If you aren’t used to it, you may be a tad grossed out by it all, but if you ever muster the courage or are a fan of beef tongue, you have to try it at La Bonita! Cooked to absolute perfection, this meal comes with potatoes, rice, salad, and yucca! These options can be substituted upon request. Finally, their Churrasco. A one inch, AAA sirloin steak that comes out on a sizzling hot plate with chimichurri and all kinds of other flavour! As a side, this dish comes with an entire plate of rice, beans, and sweet plantain; both plates for a very fair $19! La Bonita will make you want to book your next flight to Bogota in a hurry!
1) Laari Adda
Laari Adda, an Indian and Pakistani street food restaurant, recently took shape in the old Bistro Narra location in the Thomas St. and Winston Churchill area and it’s serving up some very fine South Asian cuisine. The restaurant, which is open late, offers dine-in, takeout and catering service. It also offers a bright and colourful interior that draws upon the vibrant decor frequently encountered in India and Pakistan. As far as food goes, restaurant operators say that "Laari Addas in Pakistan are famous for delicious street food and that is exactly what we are bringing back with a modern twist." One such modern menu item? Nutella parathas. The resto also offers delicious butter chicken, great service and exceptional ambiance.
