You'd be forgiven if you said you'd never heard of this tucked-away gem on Enfield Place, right behind the Sussex Centre. It's not visible from the street, but its central location and unique menu brimming with Southern Indian vegetarian cuisine puts this pleasant finding high on our list of must-visit Indian restos. The cafe, intimate and decorated in dark, rich hues, offers diners the chance to sample medu vada (a sort of savory doughnut), various dosas (crepe-like wraps) and South Indian Thali, a mini five-course meal served with a pickle, pappad, yogurt, buttermilk, sambar, rasam, poriyal, dal or kootu, gravy, rice of the day, white rice, chapati or poori and the dessert of the day. The Thali is served on a round platter with rice in the center and, despite sounding overwhelming, isn't too much for one person to finish. Diners looking for an even more authentic experience can enjoy a masala chai (tea) after their meal. The fair price point, attentive service and highly customizable menu (you can specify spice, oil and texture level for dosas) makes this inconspicuous vegetarian resto more than worth the search.

This strange spot, the small plaza just south of Longos by Winston Churchill and Laird, is exactly where you will find Dai Ichi. That said, it would be a mistake to let the unique location persuade you that this restaurant has little to offer. Far from it, Dai Ichi is arguably amongst the best Japanese restaurants in Mississauga. When you walk into the restaurant, you will see simple booths leading to a small sushi bar, and one wall of closed japanese-styled seating. Despite the basic setup, the food experience is a sheer delight. The veggie bento box came with all the staples (and all cooked very well): miso soup, rice tea, deep fried tofu with teriyaki sauce, rice, veggie tempura and avocado rolls. The service was fast, and the server was attentive. With it's fine quality food, it's no wonder Dai Ichi is seen as a local hot spot for Japanese eats in southwest Mississauga.
Lissa Genobaga and Damian Kubarski are a husband and wife team who are self-proclaimed foodies and steadfast local supporters who love their community in Clarkson - an undiscovered area of the city that has a number of gems including theirs: a brunch spot called Kravingz. The resto is unique for its made-from-scratch menu that supports local suppliers. They source a number of the ingredients for their dishes from local bakeries and suppliers such as Manila Bakery's specialty - a Filipino bread roll known as pandesal, produce from A.J. Lanzarotta, and other ingredients from Truscott Bakery and Sheridan Meats. Their signature dish is The Flip Side (house made longanisa which is a Filipino sausage served with crunchy garlic rice and a fried egg), The Polski Benedict (potato placki is a Polish potato pancake served with smoked salmon or peameal bacon, poached eggs and house made hollandaise), Chicken N' Waffles (crispy fried chicken served with bacon and jalapeno waffles, bacon dressing and coleslaw) and The Islander (jerk corned beef hash, corn and cheddar grits and poached eggs) are so far the most popular.

As far as food goes, the steaming hot rare beef pho stands up against hearty, delicious soup served in Hanoi. So, too, do the crispy Vietnamese spring rolls, served with delicate, subtle fish sauce. Other commendable dishes include the flavourful and authentic pad Thai--a dish that gets extra points for its spectacular presentation--and the vermicelli with pork. Although this restaurant is hidden, it’s already getting a reputation for being authentic and delicious. You don’t want to miss this one, even if it’s nowhere near your office.

In this case, the closure of long-standing restobar Ten Restaurant + Wine Bar has led to the opening of the brand Port House Social Bar and Kitchen. Recently, the "premium casual" restaurant and lounge opened its doors and is now offering a fairly extensive wine, cocktail and dine-in menu. In terms of beverages, the resto boasts a healthy cocktail list and a decent assortment of on tap beer, including Shock Top and Goose Island IPA.
