5) Congee Queen
After months of waiting, a highly-anticipated (and massive) Asian restaurant recently opened its doors in Mississauga. The spacious, chic and tasty Congee Queen in Heartland Town Centre is a welcome addition to Mississauga’s thriving Asian food scene, and it hit the ground running with its elegant interior and extensive menu. The brand, which also operates locations in Thornhill, North York, Markham, Scarborough and a few other GTA neighbourhoods, is located right beside the newly opened Seafood City Supermarket on Boyer Blvd. As far as food goes, the resto offers lobster super bowl congee, pumpkin hot pot congee with rock crab meat and vegetarian shark fins (which is perfect for shark fin fans who don't feel comfortable eating the controversial and, in some cases, profoundly unethical delicacy), sliced fish and blood jello congee, pork internal delicacy congee and more. As for what dishes are most worth trying, the house super bowl congee is a must.
Look out Mississauga! Chef Massimo Capra and his signature ‘stache and big personality are in our city. Chef Massimo recently opened a restaurant called Capra’s Kitchen in his hometown of Mississauga in the former Villa La Bella space along Lakeshore Rd. in the Clarkson neighbourhood. Chef Massimo is an accomplished celebrity chef, TV personality, author and Saugaboy who has an extensive resume. His career began when he first started toiling in kitchens in Italy. He made his way to Toronto in the early 80s and worked in a few notable fine dining establishments in the city. His brand new restaurant offers lunch, dinner and weekend brunch and his menu is full of delicious, classic Italian fare that's sure to leave every diner satisfied.
It looks like Mississauga's once spartan ramen scene is exploding. Recently, Sansotei Ramen opened its doors in Square One—making City Centre a new mecca for ramen. Sansotei, which currently operates locations in Toronto, North York, Markham, Ottawa and Richmond Hill, is known for both the long lineups it tends to generate and its small but satisfying menu. Some soups on the menu include tonkotsu ramen, tonkotsu black ramen, miso black ramen, shoyu ramen, spicy tan tan ramen and tomato ramen. According to Sansotei's website, the resto's ramen broth is freshly made every day with pork bone. Diners can also choose thick or thin noodles and add extra toppings (think chashu, eggs, mushrooms, green onion and more) for an additional charge.
Piatto is a long-standing Sauga gem that’s been loyally serving diners since 1989. A fine dining resto on the ground floor of an old-style house-turned-spa at the corner of Dundas and Mississauga Road, the resto boasts an old school but lively vibe and is always full of regulars. The service is attentive and accommodating—something that keeps loyal diners coming back for more on special occasions. The menu reflects Chef Abramo Tonelli's classical Italian cuisine, blended with a touch of French. Born in Argentina and of Italian descent, his daily blackboard specials are abundant in seafood options and other well-crafted selections.
Watching the culinary landscape is fascinating, as cuisine—much like clothing and decor—can seemingly come in and out of fashion. For the first time ever, a restaurant that celebrates Peruvian food (and more specifically, Peruvian and Japanese fusion cuisine) is open in Mississauga. A few short years ago, a trip to a Peruvian restaurant meant a trip to St. Clair West or Oakville. Now, there’s an option in Mississauga--and it’s also great for anyone who loves non-traditional Japanese cuisine. As far as food goes, Kage--which has made its home in the 5&10 area--serves sea bass tiradito, beef tataki, ceviche, karaage, Yokozuna's street roll, anticuchos, hot stone duck fried rice and more. The resto also boasts a modern interior and a satisfying cocktail menu.
