Before we start talking about the food and the restaurant, we’ve got to say that we love the name and where Michael’s is located. The setup is so unlike anything else in Mississauga, as it is located at the back of a building in Clarkson off Lakeshore Road and is almost a secret because it’s completely hidden from public view. As you park in the back alley, you will find a glass solarium protruding from the back. It’s almost like you are walking into a secret location. We love the risotto pescatore, which has risotto with shrimp, scallops, fresh tomatoes and white wine. This is a perfect place for a date and they even have a piano room that can accommodate 40 people (so it's great for a corporate dinner). They also have a wine room for up to 16, which is great for family parties when you just don’t want to cook at home. Michael’s is expanding so much that it might have a front door one day. Also, Michael’s Back Door has been around since 1981, so you know they’re doing something right.
You'd be forgiven if you said you'd never heard of this tucked-away gem on Enfield Place, right behind the Sussex Centre. It's not visible from the street, but its central location and unique menu brimming with Southern Indian vegetarian cuisine puts this pleasant finding high on our list of must-visit Indian restos. The cafe, intimate and decorated in dark, rich hues, offers diners the chance to sample medu vada (a sort of savory doughnut), various dosas (crepe-like wraps) and South Indian Thali, a mini five-course meal served with a pickle, pappad, yogurt, buttermilk, sambar, rasam, poriyal, dal or kootu, gravy, rice of the day, white rice, chapati or poori and the dessert of the day. The Thali is served on a round platter with rice in the center and, despite sounding overwhelming, isn't too much for one person to finish. Diners looking for an even more authentic experience can enjoy a masala chai (tea) after their meal. The fair price point, attentive service and highly customizable menu (you can specify spice, oil and texture level for dosas) makes this inconspicuous vegetarian resto more than worth the search.
3) Jing Thai
Jing Thai is a family-owned business and has been a Streetsville gem since 2004. The word jing in Thai means “true,” making the literal translation of the resto name “True Thai.” The restaurant is a quaint, white-linen tablecloth establishment without the fine dining prices. The street side portion of the restaurant is a small area lined with windows that gets filtered sunlight shining through in the afternoon. I ordered the red curry chicken. The dish comes in a red curry coconut sauce with carrots, broccoli and green beans. The flavour was good and the chicken serving generous. I also tried the pad Thai beef, which I couldn’t stop eating. The flavour was balanced and not overly acidic and it was served with bean sprouts, tofu, green onions and topped with crushed peanuts. Jing Thai is a romantic little spot that serves good Thai food.
Although Mississauga is home to a plethora of hot and popular restaurants, we’re all of the opinion that there’s always room for one more—especially when that “one more” is one we’ve been hoping for. Back in 2014, insauga.com reached out to popular ramen resto Kinton Ramen to ask if it would ever consider setting up shop in Mississauga. The restaurant operators were pleasantly enthused about the idea and said they’d been considering the Square One area.
Now, four years later, Kinton Ramen’s ambitions have been realized. The growing brand, known for its authentic pork and chicken soup, recently opened on the ground floor of the Parkside Village condos. The resto, boasting a modern interior and an exciting menu, is a welcome addition to the Square One area food scene.
The Wilcox Gastropub is located on the corner of Hurontario and Eglinton and is situated in the Wilcox House - one of Mississauga's oldest Heritage Homes which features Greek and Gothic detailing and was built by Amos and Charles Wilcox in 1850. In a place that serves everything from pork sliders to poutine, Scotch egg, ceviche, cassava frites, braised short ribs, an 18oz bone-in rib eye steak and confit of duck leg I'm going straight to the burger. This is one of their signature dishes here called The Wilcox Burger and it didn't disappoint. The beef is grounded daily and the only one on this list that actually bakes their brioche buns daily. Now that's dedication!
