You’d be forgiven if you said you’d never heard of this tucked-away gem on Enfield Place, right behind the Sussex Centre. It’s not visible from the street, but its central location and a unique menu brimming with Southern Indian vegetarian cuisine put this pleasant finding high on our list of must-visit Indian restos. The cafe, intimate and decorated in dark, rich hues, offers diners the chance to sample medu vada (a sort of savoury doughnut), various dosas (crepe-like wraps) and South Indian Thali, a mini five-course meal served with a pickle, pappad, yoghurt, buttermilk, sambar, rasam, poriyal, dal or kootu, gravy, rice of the day, white rice, chapati or poori and the dessert of the day. The Thali is served on a round platter with rice in the centre and, despite sounding overwhelming, isn’t too much for one person to finish. Diners looking for an even more authentic experience can enjoy a masala chai (tea) after their meal. The fair price point, attentive service and highly customizable menu (you can specify spice, oil and texture level for dosas) make this inconspicuous vegetarian resto more than worth the search.

In this case, the closure of long-standing restobar Ten Restaurant + Wine Bar led to the opening of the Port House Social Bar and Kitchen. Recently, the "premium casual" restaurant and lounge opened its doors and is now offering a fairly extensive wine, cocktail and dine-in menu. In terms of beverages, the resto boasts a healthy cocktail list and a decent assortment of on-tap beer, including Shock Top and Goose Island IPA. As far as wine goes, the offerings are extensive (as they should be). Vino aficionados can sip on Kim Crawford's New Zealand Pinot Noir, Argentine Malbecs, Italian Pinot Grigios and more. As far as food goes, the resto offers calamari, hot Korean wings, tuna poke wontons, a variety of pizzas, signature burgers, salmon, fish and chips, gnocchi rose, and more.
This exceedingly creative gem sits on the Mississauga and Brampton border and offers an incredible array of North American and Indian fusion dishes. It's truly one of a kind, and offers such creative concoctions as jerk chicken samosas, apple pie samosas, butter chicken mac n' cheese, butter chicken loaded fries and, most importantly, the Punjabi cheeseburger with tandoori bacon. Founded by Rick Matharu, a Recipe to Riches winner who took the top spot for his butter chicken lasagna, the restaurant does something decidedly unique and pays homage to two distinct food cultures. This is not a burger you want to miss.

Raw Aura, Port Credit’s Lakeshore-located raw, organic resto, is a treat for anyone looking for creative dishes, inventive and delicious smoothies and an honest-to-god Kensington Market, cool hipster vibe. The tiny establishment is super casual and boasts a crunchy, indie chalkboard menu. This place tends to get crowded and the dishes are a little on the pricey side (two can eat for a little over $80 with drinks and tip), but the experience is part of the package. In terms of food, you have to try the red beet ravioli. The presentation is top-notch, and it boasts beets, cashew ricotta cheese, red pepper marinara sauce and dehydrated kale chips. As for mains, the yellow coconut curry noodles is always satisfying. If you want a huge treat, try the Cinnamon Toast Crunch smoothie.

This gem, which also operates a location in Richmond Hill, recently took over the space once occupied by Sushi Tei. While many residents were sad to see Sushi Tei go, they should be happy that a Japanese place this good took its spot. This place, which offers a small, complimentary noodle dish at the start of your meal, has some of the best and freshest sushi and sashimi in Mississauga. It also offers omakase, which means customers can allow the chef to customize a meal for them. This isn't a sushi place you want to miss.
