MyKolachi Karahi & Barbeque House, an upscale Pakistani restaurant, opened its doors in November and is already impressing customers with its unique interior (think dramatic purple hues with pops of vibrant accent colours, traditional cookware suspended from the ceiling, eye-catching murals, esoteric pop culture shout-outs and prayer rooms) and impressive menu. One thing you need to order at MyKolachi? The karahi. The karahi features bone-in or boneless chicken cooked with garlic, tomatoes and MyKolachi's house blend of karahi spices. The dish, made fresher with a generous helping of sliced ginger, is both fragrant and flavourful—and it's not the only meat dish to write home about. MyKolachi also offers some pretty unforgettable kababs that you won't really want to share with your tablemates (but you should).

For the first time ever, a restaurant that celebrates Peruvian food (and more specifically, Peruvian and Japanese fusion cuisine) is open in Mississauga. A few short years ago, a trip to a Peruvian restaurant meant a trip to St. Clair West or Oakville. Now, there’s an option in Mississauga--and it’s also great for anyone who loves non-traditional Japanese cuisine. As far as food goes, Kage--which has made its home in the 5&10 area--serves sea bass tiradito, beef tataki, ceviche, karaage, Yokozuna's street roll , blow torched salmon escabeche, anticuchos, hot stone duck fried rice and more. The resto also boosts a modern interior and a satisfying cocktail menu.
Before we start talking about the food and the restaurant, we've got to say that we love the name and where Michael's is located. The setup is so unlike anything else in Mississauga, as it is located at the back of a building in Clarkson off Lakeshore Road and is almost a secret because it's completely hidden from public view. As you park in the back alley, you will find a glass solarium protruding from the back. It's almost like you are walking into a secret location. We love the risotto pescatore, which has risotto with shrimp, scallops, fresh tomatoes and white wine. This is a perfect place for a date and they even have a piano room that can accommodate 40 people (so it’s great for a corporate dinner). They also have a wine room for up to 16, which is great for family parties when you just don't want to cook at home. Michael's is expanding so much that it might have a front door one day. Also, Michael's Back Door has been around since 1981, so you know they're doing something right.
You’d be forgiven if you said you’d never heard of this tucked-away gem on Enfield Place, right behind the Sussex Centre. It’s not visible from the street, but its central location and unique menu brimming with Southern Indian vegetarian cuisine puts this pleasant finding high on our list of must-visit Indian restos. The cafe, intimate and decorated in dark, rich hues, offers diners the chance to sample medu vada (a sort of savory doughnut), various dosas (crepe-like wraps) and South Indian Thali, a mini five-course meal served with a pickle, pappad, yogurt, buttermilk, sambar, rasam, poriyal, dal or kootu, gravy, rice of the day, white rice, chapati or poori and the dessert of the day. The Thali is served on a round platter with rice in the center and, despite sounding overwhelming, isn’t too much for one person to finish. Diners looking for an even more authentic experience can enjoy a masala chai (tea) after their meal. The fair price point, attentive service and highly customizable menu (you can specify spice, oil and texture level for dosas) makes this inconspicuous vegetarian resto more than worth the search.
Nomad’s Restobar is another Toronto joint that just expanded into our neck of the woods--and its second location is happily situated in Port Credit. The family-owned establishment, which opened just west of Hurontario on Lakeshore Blvd., also operates a location on the Danforth. According to the resto's website, head chef David (also known as "Chile") has been a Red Seal chef for well over a decade and created a menu dedicated to "Global Inspirations—Local Creations." As far as the menu goes, the resto offers cheese and charcuterie boards, a globally-inspired Wanderlust platter, Kalbi short ribs, a satay platter, ceviche, tacos, sushi, jerk-style wings, chana masala, chimichanga, chicken and waffles, shrimp fried rice and more.
