5) Kravingz

Lissa Genobaga and Damian Kubarski are a husband and wife team who are self-proclaimed foodies and steadfast local supporters who love their community in Clarkson - an undiscovered area of the city that has a number of gems including theirs: a brunch spot called Kravingz. The resto is unique for its made-from-scratch menu that supports local suppliers. They source a number of the ingredients for their dishes from local bakeries and suppliers such as Manila Bakery's specialty - a Filipino bread roll known as pandesal, produce from A.J. Lanzarotta, and other ingredients from Truscott Bakery and Sheridan Meats. Their signature dish is The Flip Side (house made longanisa which is a Filipino sausage served with crunchy garlic rice and a fried egg), The Polski Benedict (potato placki is a Polish potato pancake served with smoked salmon or peameal bacon, poached eggs and house made hollandaise), Chicken N' Waffles (crispy fried chicken served with bacon and jalapeno waffles, bacon dressing and coleslaw) and The Islander (jerk corned beef hash, corn and cheddar grits and poached eggs) are so far the most popular.


4) Avani

Avani, located at Mavis and Matheson, gets extra points for being a unique Indian and Asian cuisine fusion restaurant. Spacious and elegant with its use of deep colours and linen tablecloths, its extensive menu offers a pakora platter, spring rolls, samosa rolls, butter chicken, chicken haryali and pad Thai. Seeing the exquisitely prepared chicken haryali was probably the most joyous part of the meal. The savory, tender chicken dish -- known for its electric green colour, thanks to its coriander marinade -- was exceptional. The presentation was also top notch, with a thin layer of cream adorning the slightly tough butter chicken. The aforementioned samosa rolls were also a hit, fusing Indian and Asian cuisine by stuffing a spring roll wrapper with samosa filling.


3) Papa Giuseppe’s

You can’t really miss this quaint little restaurant that’s located in the heart of Port Credit. If you are one of the lucky people who actually get a seat, you are in for a treat. This place has a rustic Italian-inspired dining room and is a great spot to enjoy your pizza, which is cooked in a stone oven. Papa Giuseppe’s also serves house-made gnocchi and I can never say no to that. They also serve a selection of antipasti, including insalata caprese, and a wide selection of pastas including Nona’s Pasta Campania or carbonara (marche). If you are lucky enough, try to get a seat directly in front of the kitchen so you can eat and watch the chef and cooking staff do their thing. In the summer months, they have a really nice patio they open up at the back of the restaurant. If you are on a date and you get into this place you look like a Don Juan!


2) Aielli Ristorante

Mark your calendar or book your next night out to Aielli Restaurant. It is one of the finer Italian restaurants in Mississauga that caters to its customers and is a great place to dine. Its 30 year history in Port Credit is a testament to what they do best - food and wine. It was the perfect night for a hearty Italian meal created by Chef/Proprietor Luigi Macerola. Aielli has a beautiful wine room that holds over 10,000 bottles. This area can also host small and intimate private functions. Aielli also has some bragging rights, winning multiple Awards of Excellence from the Wine Spectator -- a highly revered resource for the world’s finest wines.


1) Masamune Japanese Restaurant

Masamune Japanese Restaurant has been in Mississauga for 19 years and is one of the only Japanese restaurants in our Top 5 list to offer both Western style dining with Western tables and chairs and traditional Japanese style dining in Zashiki Rooms (also referred to as Tatami Rooms). The Zashiki room is where a group can dine in traditional Japanese style with shoes removed, chabudai (low tables), small pillows to sit on, and a sunken floor for your legs. I ordered more than a few dishes which included Sunomono Salad, Spicy Salmon Handroll, Fried Tofu, and a Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box. The Sashimi is most definitely the freshest and most tender in the top 5. The Soft Shell Crab and the accompanying sauce were flavourful and a decent portion size. Overall, the experience was good including the attentive customer service. This place is a little pricier but you can tell why in the quality of fish.
