Tremendous. The name says it all. The iconic late night hotspot named after an adjective. I think everyone remembers going to this place after a great night out at the bar—and if that's something you haven't done in awhile, you're truly missing out. While the food is tasty and filling at all times of the day, this place is just as well known for its traditional dim sum as it is for long hours. If you hit this place up on a weekend, expect to wait a few minutes for a table. Once you're finally seated, you can enjoy on-point steamed pork buns, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, spring rolls, egg noodles and more.
17 Steakhouse and Bar was one of the most impressive new openings of 2015. Millions were spent redesigning the majestic 32,000 sq. ft. space filled with over the top features such as a gorgeous oversized freshwater aquarium filled with a colourful array of African cichlid fish that’s visible from both the main bar and one of the two private dining rooms. The menu includes a number of U.S., Ontario and Alberta prime cuts of beef, including the tenderloin, strip loin, prime T-bone, porterhouse and tomahawk. You will also find Japanese A5 wagyu and a reasonably priced American flat iron wagyu at $40 for 8 oz. Other options include oysters, ahi tuna, seared scallops, tempura shrimp, fish options, salads, duck confit, bison tenderloin, risotto, chicken, braised back ribs, charcuterie board, calamari and a seafood tower.
Avani, located at Mavis and Matheson, gets extra points for being a unique Indian and Asian cuisine fusion restaurant. Spacious and elegant with its use of deep colours and linen tablecloths, its extensive menu offers a pakora platter, spring rolls, samosa rolls, butter chicken, chicken haryali and pad Thai. Seeing the exquisitely prepared chicken haryali was probably the most joyous part of the meal. The savory, tender chicken dish -- known for its electric green colour, thanks to its coriander marinade -- was exceptional. The presentation was also top notch, with a thin layer of cream adorning the slightly tough butter chicken. The aforementioned samosa rolls were also a hit, fusing Indian and Asian cuisine by stuffing a spring roll wrapper with samosa filling.
Look out Mississauga! Chef Massimo Capra and his signature 'stache and big personality are in our city. Chef Massimo recently opened a restaurant called Capra's Kitchen in his hometown of Mississauga in the former Villa La Bella space along Lakeshore Rd. in the Clarkson neighbourhood. Chef Massimo is an accomplished celebrity chef, TV personality, author and Saugaboy who has an extensive resume. Starting from the ground up, his career began when he first started toiling in kitchens in Italy. He made his way to Toronto in the early 80s and worked in a few notable fine dining establishments in the city. His brand new restaurant offers lunch, dinner and weekend brunch and his menu is full of delicious, classic Italian fare that’s sure to leave every diner satisfied.
1) Border MX
This authentic Mexican place has garnered a lot of attention since it opened because Mississauga doesn’t have many Mexican joints like it. The chef is from Mexico, so she knows her stuff and makes truly authentic dishes in her Mexican kitchen. Now with two locations in Mississauga the menu offers traditional Mexican dishes, including fajitas, tamales, flautas and pork carnitas. Friday and Saturday nights are reserved for Chef Rico’s regional Mexican specials such as Tongue Tacos (self-explanatory) and Pozole (a soup made of pork or chicken broth with hominy and other garnishes). The Cooksville resto benefits from prime spot on Hurontario, friendly service and a reliably delicious menu.
