5) Congee Queen
After months of waiting, a highly-anticipated (and massive) Asian restaurant recently opened its doors in Mississauga. The spacious, chic and tasty Congee Queen in Heartland Town Centre is a welcome addition to Mississauga's thriving Asian food scene and it hit the ground running with its elegant interior and massive menu. The brand, which also operates locations in Thornhill, North York, Markham, Scarborough and a few other GTA neighbourhoods, is located right beside the newly opened Seafood City Supermarket on Boyer Blvd. As far as food goes, the resto offers lobster super bowl congee, pumpkin hot pot congee with rock crab meat and vegetarian shark fins (which is perfect for shark fin fans who don’t feel comfortable eating the controversial and, in some cases, deeply unethical delicacy), sliced fish and blood jello congee, pork internal delicacy congee and more. As for what dishes are most worth trying, the house super bowl congee is a must.
Piatto is a long-standing Sauga gem that’s been loyally serving diners since 1989. A fine dining resto on the ground floor of an old-style house-turned-spa at the corner of Dundas and Mississauga Road, the resto boasts an old school but lively vibe and is always full of regulars. The service is attentive and accommodating—something that keeps loyal diners coming back for more on special occasions. The menu reflects Chef Abramo Tonelli's classical Italian cuisine, blended with a touch of French. Born in Argentina and of Italian descent, his daily blackboard specials are abundant in seafood options and other well crafted selections.
MyKolachi Karahi & Barbeque House, an upscale Pakistani restaurant, opened its doors in November and is already impressing customers with its unique interior (think dramatic purple hues with pops of vibrant accent colours, traditional cookware suspended from the ceiling, eye-catching murals, esoteric pop culture shout-outs and prayer rooms) and impressive menu. One thing you need to order at MyKolachi? The karahi. The karahi features bone-in or boneless chicken cooked with garlic, tomatoes and MyKolachi’s house blend of karahi spices. The dish, made fresher with a generous helping of sliced ginger, is both fragrant and flavourful--and it’s not the only meat dish to write home about. MyKolachi also offers some pretty unforgettable kababs that you won’t really want to share with your tablemates (but you should).
Nomad's Restobar is another Toronto joint that just expanded into our neck of the woods—and its second location is happily situated in Port Credit. The family-owned establishment, which opened just west of Hurontario on Lakeshore Blvd., also operates a location on the Danforth. According to the resto’s website, head chef David (also known as “Chile”) has been a Red Seal chef for well over a decade and created a menu dedicated to “Global Inspirations--Local Creations.” As far as the menu goes, the resto offers cheese and charcuterie boards, a globally-inspired Wanderlust platter, Kalbi short ribs, a satay platter, ceviche, tacos, sushi, jerk-style wings, chana masala, chimichanga, chicken and waffles, shrimp fried rice and more.
The Wilcox Gastropub is located on the corner of Hurontario and Eglinton and is situated in the Wilcox House - one of Mississauga's oldest Heritage Homes which features Greek and Gothic detailing and was built by Amos and Charles Wilcox in 1850. In a place that serves everything from pork sliders to poutine, Scotch egg, ceviche, cassava frites, braised short ribs, an 18oz bone-in rib eye steak and confit of duck leg I'm going straight to the burger. This is one of their signature dishes here called The Wilcox Burger and it didn't disappoint. The beef is grounded daily and the only one on this list that actually bakes their brioche buns daily. Now that's dedication!
