One of the best kept secrets in Mississauga is Fred’s Bar & Grill. Locals and regulars already know this, but the lemon tomato grilled calamari is legendary. This place underwent a reno and the new digs offer 26 TVs and two 80” babies on the wall, so there is not a bad vantage point anywhere in the restaurant. You can find Fred’s hidden in a small plaza in central Mississauga. It serves up some of the best bar food and has great service. The old faithful don’t have to worry, as they have not changed the menu and still have some of the best wings and calamari in the city. This little place is great for chilling, hanging out, watching sports and getting to know and/or impress someone on a date.
The Wilcox Gastropub is located on the corner of Hurontario and Eglinton and is situated in the Wilcox House - one of Mississauga's oldest Heritage Homes which features Greek and Gothic detailing and was built by Amos and Charles Wilcox in 1850. In a place that serves everything from pork sliders to poutine, Scotch egg, ceviche, cassava frites, braised short ribs, an18oz bone-in rib eye steak and confit of duck leg I'm going straight to the burger. This is one of their signature dishes here called The Wilcox Burger and it didn't disappoint. The beef is grounded daily and the only one on this list that actually bakes their brioche buns daily. Now that's dedication!
Imagine you've been whisked away to a Queen West bar. Ever since it opened, this place has been crazy. Even on weeknights, when other bars in the area are dead, this place is bursting at the seams with people and for good reason. Get ready to be amazed. Every aspect of this place — including the space and menu — has been designed with the utmost thought to detail. Although the food menu is only about five per cent of entire menu (there are only 13 items), you will find interesting takes on southern classics, such as chicken and waffles, Rub Me the Right Way beef brisket, Boars Gone Wild smoked sausage, bison chipotle frank, blackened shrimp and gumbo cheddar grits and the boss platter (BBQ sampler platter). All of meat is smoked with SmokinLicious' cherry wood and sugar maple wood chips, which "gives a nice sweetness to meat."
2) Union Social
Located in the northwest end of Mississauga by the huge Royal Bank building off the 401, is a non-chain restaurant called Union Social Eatery. The restaurant has an airy, open concept feel with a bar lined with large flat screen TVs that sits center stage. The lounge area is to the right and the dining area to the left. Everything is made in-house, including their signature sauces, in-house smoked wings and hand-cut Yukon Gold fries. You know a place is doing well when they open up their first location in Mississauga and then expand into Toronto. Usually it’s the other way around. This is the case for Union Social Eatery, who opened their second location at Yonge and St. Clair. They are doing something right along with dishing out good food!
Recently, we announced that we were pretty pumped to hear that a brand new Mexican restaurant was set to open in a city that's lacking in Mexican sit-down restaurants. Now, the newest addition to Mississauga's growing Mexican scene has officially opened its doors. El Mariachi Tacos and Churros has set up shop in Streetsville and is now serving authentic tacos filled with all manner of delicious ingredients, including chorizo, carnitas, tinga, pozole and more. As the name implies, the resto also specializes in Churros. The restaurant has taken shape in the Graydon Pub building on Queen Street South. The brand new restaurant will provide the long-standing Cantina Mexicana with a little extra competition.
