Smoothies are a huge staple in my everyday diet for so many reasons: they’re healthy, they’re delicious, they’re easy to make and they’re portable and convenient. The great thing about smoothies is that you can make them in innumerable variations depending on your taste and what you’re craving that day.

On the other hand, sometimes you just can’t make a smoothie like the ones that specialty places offer. Whether it’s the blender or the ingredients, something about these smoothie joints is just spot on perfection every time. Great for when you’re on the go and looking for a quick pick me up, I’ve searched and found the top five places to grab a smoothie in the city.

5 – Studio 89

Studio 89 is not your typical smoothie bar – it really is an all encompassing free space that happens to serve some delicious fruit and veggie smoothies. The space is an open concept that is an excellent meeting point for friends, group or solo workspace, or really whatever you want to make of it. The non-profit organisation offers fair trade, organic, vegan and gluten-free food and drink options and supports many different causes.

At Studio 89 you design your own smoothie with their “Mix Two” or “Mix Three” options of strawberry, banana and kale, with your choice of protein, fibre boost or green balance to add in. They also have whole, skim, almond and hemp milk options to mix in which is great for those who may be lactose intolerant. My choice was a mix of strawberry, banana and kale with almond milk – absolutely delicious.

4 – JuiceBox Smoothies

Located just inside the doors of the L.A. fitness off of Hurontario and the 401, JuiceBox Smoothies welcomes members of the gym as well as non-members to enjoy their delightful smoothies and post-workout snacks. They have a selection of different flavours and you can mix in different types of proteins and supplements to make sure you get in your vitamins and fruits and veggie servings.

I went for the “Nutty Monkey” shake, a mix of banana and peanut butter with an added serving of Veggie Greens, which gives 6-8 servings of vegetables. Needless to say the smoothie tasted fantastic – not to mention, they have a loyalty program as well so after every ninth smoothie, you get the tenth free! JuiceBox Smoothies is a great go-to for those in North Mississauga.

3 – The Cold Pressery

Neatly tucked away near Square One just off of Rathburn Road, The Cold Pressery is the perfect under the radar place for smoothies when you’re looking to avoid the bustle of Square One itself. The organic juice bar serves to promote a healthy lifestyle, and offers much more than just smoothies. As it’s name suggests, it offers an array of cold pressed juices, along with healthy smoothies, food and snacks for on the go guilt-free fuel.

After a hot yoga session, I tried out the “Choco-Maca Shake” for a boost of sugar and energy and was extremely satisfied with my decision: a mix of banana, raw cacao nibs, raw cacao, raw maca, almond butter and almond milk was a sweet treat to fill me up, satisfy my sugar craving and yet feel light and energized.

2 – Organique Juice Bar

Oragnique is unique to the others on this list simply because it has the greatest number of juice and smoothie options, since it is a juice bar above all. Located in Streetsville, they have a wide range of cold-pressed juices which serve as excellent meal replacements to grab on the go, and their shelf life lasts longer than that of a smoothie (of course!).

Their smoothies are raw, organic and packed with superfoods, and have two liquid bases to choose from: coconut water and almond milk. In need of some serious vitamins following a night of wine indulgence, I opted for the “Green Protein” smoothie: almond milk, banana, spinach, hemp protein, almond butter, kale, agave nectar and chia seeds. Packed with green vegetables and vitamins, the shake was an instant hangover cure with a great taste to boot.

1 – Raw Aura

I am in love with Raw Aura in Port Credit. With 100% raw ingredients, they have so many vegan, vegetarian and mouth-watering options that will make any health-nut indulge. They offer a mix of appetizers, salads, mains, sides, desserts, and of course smoothies, that are not only healthy and delicious, but all at affordable prices.

I opted for the “Cinnimon Toast Crunch” smoothie, and my goodness did they deliver – in fact, this smoothie tasted better than the cereal. With almond butter, dates, banana, cinnamon and maca, this sweet treat was the perfect size and pick me up for my day of running around the city.
