With all of these heat warnings a bowl of gelato is just the thing to cool you down. Lucky for you, Mississauga is home to some pretty decent gelateria. Often referred to as Italian ice cream, gelato is a made in a special machine with a based of either milk or fruit, and has a denser texture and more rich flavour than ice cream. Here are the top five spots to get gelato in Mississauga.

5 – Fired Up

Walking into Fired Up you wouldn’t expect to find some of Mississauga’s best gelato. A wood fire grill restaurant, the air smells like a campground, and this campground has some pretty amazing gelato on offer. Made fresh, at the chefs first restaurant, the gelato flavours change daily and come in three heaping scoops. A little lighter than the classic gelato density, they definitely have the flavours down. This gelato is the perfect way to end any meal.

4 – Lazio Bakery

Another bakery on this list, which shouldn’t be too surprising considering that it is an Italian tradition to pick up a bowl of gelato with your boxed Italian pastries. The place is usually packed with customers so be prepared to wait for your Italian ice cream. The gelato is made fresh by the owners, and while the selection is limited, they have all of the classic gelato flavours, like limone, tiramisu and chocolate!

3 – Amici

A small sports cafe, there is always a game on at Amici’s. While you’re watching the game, it would be a good call if you grabbed a bowl of their gelato, alongside your espresso. Made in-house, their gelato may not have the same authentic flavours as some of the others on this list, but it has a great consistency, and there is always something new to try! The owner is always on hand to help pick your favourite flavour. Your best bet would be the pistachio or limone!

2 – La Sem

La Sem has been a part of the Mississauga Italian bakery scene for years, and serves some of the best gelato in the city. Known for their gorgeous custom cakes, they also have a pretty All of their gelato is made in-house and they offer quite the selection, with rotating flavours every so often. Their stracciatella, a milk based gelato with chocolate shavings, is delicious and refreshing, especially on those really hot days!

1 – Port 1 Cafe & Gelateria

Port 1 Cafe & Gelateria is located in the heart of Port Credit. It is family owned cafe, and balances the Italian bistro and mom and pop shop vibes. The friendly staff will help you pick from their gelato and sorbet selection, which is all made fresh in house everyday. The decor has an Italian bistro vibe to it, with high top tables and bistro style seating. The gelato is delicious, tasting authentic and refreshing. Their salted caramel flavour has bits of real chocolate and caramel throughout. Word of advice: the best spot to have your gelato is on their sidewalk patio!
