Dangerous thunderstorms and toonie-sized hail are possible today in Mississauga and Brampton.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Peel Region and many parts of Ontario today (Aug. 10).

Conditions are favourable for dangerous thunderstorms that could produce strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain, Environment Canada said.

Hazards include “Toonie size hail” and wind gusts up to 90 km/hr.

Heavy rainfall amounts approaching 40 mm are possible.

The line of thunderstorms are tracking southeast today while strengthening, the national weather forecaster said.

The timing was late this morning into this afternoon. This line of storms is expected to move out of the area late this afternoon.

“The primary threat with these thunderstorms is hail,” Environment Canada warns. “Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury.”

Also, strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Environment Canada warns that water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.

“If you hear thunder, then lightning is close enough to be dangerous.”

Emergency Management Ontario advises people to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
