Hamilton’s McMaster Children’s Hospital had decided to pause all tonsil and adenoid operations procedures after two children at the healthcare facility died following their surgery.

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) announce in a statement released on Wednesday (June 5) it was pausing the procedures “out of an abundance of caution” after both children died days after their surgeries.

“On child passed away the day after their surgery, and the second child passed away nine days after their initial surgery,” said HHS. “We want to extend our deepest condolences to these families.”

There is no “apparent connection” between the two cases, said HHS.

The healthcare company didn’t announce the exact dates of the two deaths but said the pause on the tonsil and adenoid surgeries was put into place at the Hamilton Hospital on Tuesday.

They also announced they have begun to review its pediatric program for both surgeries.
