Something kind of tiny is happening at Celebration Square in Mississauga’s downtown core starting on Family Day — but it just might draw some big crowds.

Habitat for Humanity has dropped off one of its tiny homes at the popular City Centre outdoor venue and it will remain there for a couple of months to let people take a look and, if they want, take a tour inside the little house.

The 225-sq.-ft. studio‑style unit, built by local high school students, will open its front door to tours on the square starting this coming Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin officials say.

The tiny home will remain on site and open to tours through April 19. Visitors can take a look inside the little home, also known as a garden suite, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-7 p.m. and Saturdays/Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Tiny homes/garden suites are allowed in Mississauga with the required city permits, officials say.

After taking a tour of the small residential unit at Celebration Square, people can speak with Habitat for Humanity staff “to learn how they’re built and whether one could work on your property,” organizers of the tiny home showcase say.

The self-contained units can be purchased by homeowners and installed in their backyard for extra living space, according to Habitat for Humanity.

The tiny homes include a kitchen, living area, sleeping space and washroom.

“Tiny homes are a good option for homeowners looking for an accessible way to age in place, families who need extra space or anyone looking to add a rental unit for extra income,” officials said in an online description of the Celebration Square event and the tiny homes.
