Time is running out to run for mayor or council in Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Whitby and Oshawa

The deadline to run for mayor, council or school trustee is fast approaching in Durham Region.

Those looking to serve their community in municipal politics have until 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19 to file nomination papers.

Candidates must be a resident or property owner in the municipality, be 18 years old or older, and be a Canadian citizen.

Council and mayoral candidates must get at the signature of at least 25 eligible voters in their municipality to endorse their nomination. School trustee candidates do not need endorsement signatures.

The filing fee to run for mayor or regional chair is $200, and $100 for council or school trustee.

Nomination papers are filed in person at the municipal town hall.

The nomination period opened on May 2 and most municipalities have a healthy number of candidates.

In Oshawa, as of Aug. 17, only one person, Joe Ingino, has put their name forward to run against incumbent Mayor Dan Carter. To see who is running visit the candidates page.

Whitby has three candidates for mayor as of Aug. 17 — Evan Griffiths, Deidre Newman, and Elizabeth Roy. Current Mayor Don Mitchell announced his retirement in May. Visit the election website in Whitby for all the candidates.

Kevin Ashe, Janice Frampton, and Bradley Nazar are running for mayor in Pickering. Current Mayor Dan Ryan is retiring. See the Pickering candidates page for council and trustee contenders.
