The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have added an American to competiton to fill Lirim Hajrullahu’s kicking shoe, while also parting ways with 11 players.

The Canadian Football League club announced it has added Jimmy Camacho, a 25-year-old native of Santa Ana, Calif., to its training camp roster. Camacho will be joining St. Catharines native Michael Domagala and American hopeful Taylor Bertolet in the race to earn the Ticats’ kicking job.

Hajrullahu, who handled placekicking and punting in 2019 when the Ticats went to the Grey Cup, is no longer with the club. The St. Catharines native had been looking for a shot in the NFL.

Camacho (pictured), who is five-foot-10 and 180 pounds, was on the B.C. Lions roster in 2020, when the CFL cancelled its season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He had a stint with the Arizona Rattlers in the Indoor Football League in 2019.

Prior to turning pro, Camacho played three seasons of U.S. major-college football at Fresno State University. In 2017, he set a team record for field goals (25) and tallied the second-most points by a kicker in a single-season in Fresno State history with 116. He finished in the top 20 in the Football Bowl Subdivision in points scored and was a second-team all-star in the Mountain West conference.

The Ticats’ cuts on Monday included 11 players, including kicker Gabriel Ferraro, a Mississauga native who previously played with the University of Guelph.

Two other nationals were released: wide receiver Marcus Davis and defensive tackle Austin Fordham-Miller.

Eight American players were waived: defensive backs Daniel Brown, Reggie Cole and Donovan Olumba; defensive ends Nate Harvey IV and Stacy Keely; wide receivers Jonathan Duhart and Diondre Overton; and offensive lineman Scottie Dill;

The Tiger-Cats are 10 days out from their season opener, a road game against the defending Grey Cup champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Aug. 5.
