Thunderstorm risk for parts of Ontario, some could be severe

There’s a risk of thunderstorms for parts of Ontario, some of which could be severe.

Environment Canada has detailed the active weather threat in thunderstorm outlooks.

Here’s a look at what’s expected:

Friday p.m.

Following storms Friday morning in parts of northern Ontario, many areas are expected to see active weather in the afternoon and evening.

The most severe storms are expected for location C highlighted in orange on the map below, which includes Kenora.

“Strong thunderstorms are likely to develop in the afternoon and continue into the evening. Some of these thunderstorms will have the potential to produce wind gusts up to 110 km/h, hail up to 5 cm diameter, and a risk of tornadoes,” forecasters said for those areas.

Downed trees, power outages, property damage, injuries, and flash flooding are all possible.

Up to 60 mm of rain could fall locally.

Location B on the map highlighted in yellow also has a risk of strong storms in the afternoon and evening.

There, some storms could also bring 110 km/h winds, hail up to 5 cm in diameter, and a risk of a tornado.

Up to 40 mm of rain could fall locally.

Location A could see scattered thunderstorms with winds up to 110 km/h, hail up to 3 cm, and up to 40 mm of rain locally.

Areas highlighted in grey could see isolated thunderstorms with up to 30 mm of rain.

Saturday

On Saturday, there is again a threat of storms in part of northwestern Ontario (location A below).

“Strong thunderstorms may cross into Ontario in the late evening. Hail up to 4 cm and strong winds up to 90 km/h are possible,” forecasters said.

Up to 30 mm of rain could fall locally.

Areas shaded in grey, which includes portions of northern and southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton, and Niagara Region, could see isolated thunderstorms that bring 20 to 30 mm of rain.
