Three people charged in connection to loaded gun discovered during traffic stop in Brampton

Peel Regional Police (PRP) have charged three men in connection to a loaded gun found during a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check stop in Brampton.

During the early hours of December 6, PRP officers were conducting random sobriety tests on drivers in the area of Mississauga Road and Embleton Road.

During the stop, officers noticed a violation of the Cannabis Control Act, which lead to a search of the vehicle. During the aforementioned search, officers discovered a loaded .45 handgun.

As a result of the investigation, 19-year-old Birhan Osman of Toronto, 29-year-old Jayson Jeyakanthan of Brampton, and 29-year-old Lavan Paleswaran were all charged with:

  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Careless Storage of Firearm and Ammunition
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing there was a Firearm
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited and Restricted Firearm

Additionally, Osman was charged with Fail to Comply with a Release Order, while Jeyakanthan was charged with Fail to Comply with a Release Order and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

All three men were held for a bail hearing and appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in the City of Brampton on December 6.
