Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) has endorsed three men from the city after their “quick action and bravery” saved a driver from a burning car.

On the morning of July 4 a car spun out of control while heading east on Queen Elizabeth Way. According to MFES, the driver suffered a seizure and drove off the roadway near Cawthra Rd ending up on the off-ramp.

The heat from their car ignite the grass around where the car ended up. This blaze in turn set the car on fire. Three other motorists Charles Salameh and two identified only Fabricio L and Tyler A pulled over to help.

The driver was unconscious when the trio arrived and the fire was spreading in the engine compartment. The men tried to open the door but were unable. They then tried to smash the windows with their elbows, but could not shatter the glass.

A truck driver pulled over and gave the men a hammer with which the manages to break the glass. The trio managed to pull the driver out of the car as the fire reached the drivers compartment.

The driver received minor burns to their face and arm and one of the rescuers burned their leg. The car was fully ablaze by the time MFES arrived on scene.

This led Captain Chris Ogg to comment, “there is no doubt in my mind the driver would have suffered significant injury or death if not for these acts of bravery.”

Ogg then recommended the three men for the Fire Chief’s Commendation Award. Chief Deryn Rizzi endorsed the move saying, “These three will be acknowledged and recognized for their quick action and bravery, risking their own personal safety for another.”
