Three Hamilton postal codes have some of Ontario’s worst COVID-19 positivity

Three areas in Hamilton are among those with the highest COVID-19 percent positivity rates (percentage of positive COVID-19 tests in the area) in Ontario.

Toronto-based research group ICES listed postal code areas in Ontario with the highest percent positivity rates for the week of May 16 to 22.

Of the top 50 listed, three are in Hamilton:

L8J, Stoney Creek at 13.96%
17th highest percent positivity area in Ontario

L8L, Hamilton North End at 12.79%
29th highest percent positivity area in Ontario

L9B, area of Rymal Rd and Upper James St at 12.43%
34th highest percent positivity area in Ontario

Hamilton’s overall percent positivity is 8.34%, the third highest out of all 34 Ontario public health units.

Ontario overall is listed 10th at 6.06%.

For all Ontario residents, the overall percent positivity among those tested for COVID-19 during the week of May 16 was 6.2%, a drop from 7.2% the previous week.

Ontario has reached 57% overall vaccine coverage among those aged 12 and up, a 3% increase from the previous week.

ICES has noted steady declines in COVID-19 testing rates among younger age groups in most of Ontario, especially school-aged children and young adults aged 18-22 years old.
