Thirteen-year-old boy charged with second-degree murder of 15-year-old in Toronto

TORONTO — A 13-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of another teenager, Toronto police said Friday.
Officers found a 15-year-old boy suffering from life-threatening injuries in the underground parking garage of an apartment building late Wednesday, said Det. Sgt. Rob Choe.
Officers tried to save the boy’s life, but he died at the scene, police said.
Police arrested the 13-year-old the following day.
“Both families in this case are understandably devastated,” Choe said during a news conference. “We are supporting them in the best way that we can.”
Choe noted that the name of the accused is protected by a publication ban under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He said the teen was due in Youth Court on Friday morning.
“Although we are not looking for any other suspects, we are still in the midst of our investigation,” he said.
Police seized two guns and ammunition from the scene, he said.
Staff Supt. Lauren Pogue said both the victim’s family and his community are traumatized.
“In this case, the involvement of two teen boys is almost unimaginable and, as a community, we should be devastated,” she said, according to remarks from the news conference posted online by police.
“It is a sad and unfortunate example of the proliferation of handguns in our city.”
