When Niagara Regional Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr Mustafa Hirji sounded the alarm bells on the dangers of the Delta variant of COVID-19 last week, it didn’t take long for his concerns to become reality.

Today (August 12), Niagara Health reported there were 13 new cases of COVID-19 in the region and the Delta variant is now responsible for 75 per cent of the existing 65 active cases,

It’s the second highest number in Niagara since Canada Day after July 2 saw 14 cases reported.

The new cases drove numbers up in the region’s larger municipalities as Niagara Falls now has 13 cases, St Catharine has 12, Welland has 10 and Thorold has nine.

Port Colborne and Wainfleet are the only municipalities reporting zero cases.
