These Popular Stores are Set to Close in Canada This Year
It’s hard out there for a brick and mortar establishment, and now that it's officially 2019, we sadly have to say goodbye to a few popular stores in Canada.
These stores include Town Shoes, Jean Machine, and Lowe's (RONA).
Town Shoes, owned by the American-based DSW brand, according to a Retail Insider article, was first founded in 1952 by Leonard Simpson after he took over a failing store located at the Sunnybrook Plaza.
There are 38 stores across the country all of which will be closed by the end of the company's fiscal year which, according to a CTV News article, is at the end of this month (January).
The company was in business for 66 years.
In a press release, Jean Machine announced that all of its 24 Ontario locations will be closing.
The company was first established in 1976.
All stores will be closed by Jan. 31, 2019 but four stores will remain open until Feb. 28, 2019.
Moving forward, all sales will be final and the store will not be offering refunds or exchanges. However, all sales made prior to Nov. 1, 2018 will fall under the store’s 14-day return/exchange policy.
All customers that have Jean Machine gift cards are encouraged to redeem them before the closing takes effect.
Lowe's announced back in November of 2018 that underperforming stores will be closing in order to improve the overall health of the company's store portfolio.
The closure will be impacting 27 underperforming stores and four other locations across the country.
These stores are expected to be closed as of Feb. 1.
The following Ontario stores will be impacted by the closure.
RONA Mississauga (Westdale Mall, Store #55430)
1133 Dundas Street West, Mississauga
RONA Mississauga (Lakeshore, Store #55390)
1692 Lakeshore Rd, Mississauga
RONA Sault Ste. Marie (Store #33640)
132 Black Road, Sault Ste. Marie
RONA Sudbury (Store #33020)
943 Barry Downe Road, Sudbury
RONA Peterborough (Store #55520)
1575 Chemong Road, Peterborough
RONA Kingston (Bath Road, Store #55310)
1452 Bath Road, Kingston
RONA Lakefield (Store #33140)
178 Water Street, Lakefield
Lowe's North York - Centerpoint (Store #3320)
6600 Yonge Street, North York
Lowe's Sault Ste. Marie (Store #3276)
248 Northern Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie
Sadly, according to another Retail Insider article, this could just be the beginning and we may be seeing more store closures down the line.
Editor’s Note: A previous version of this article stated that the Lowe’s closure will be impacting 31 Canadian stores and other locations (RONA). The closure will be impacting 27 underperforming stores and the four other locations are closing in Canada, not 31 stores. The four other locations are other types of facilities. The article has been corrected. We regret the error.
