Heated Rivalry has been capturing hearts all around the world, so it’s only natural that eventually a musical parody would be made spoofing the hit TV show.
What has quickly become a beloved Canadian cultural export, Heated Rivalry is the gay hockey romance that’s been adapted into a television series everyone’s been talking about. Based on a series of books, the show has become a major phenomenon and one of Canada’s proudest pop-culture creations.
Even Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has been jumping on the bandwagon lately, posing with the stars of the show for photos. People have also been clamouring for a chance to stay at the famous cottage from the show, which was listed on Airbnb.
In case you want to pretend you haven’t watched it (and rewatched it multiple times), the show follows the budding (but forbidden) romance that develops between two fledgling hockey stars, Shane Hollander from Canada and Ilya Rozanov from Russia.
Rozanov will be played by Jay Armstrong Johnson, and Hollander will be played by Jimin Moon in the unauthorized musical parody, with shows beginning next month.
“Inspired by the hit show about hockey, Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody follows starry-eyed golden boy Shane Hollander on his journey from power center to power bottom. Relive all of the moments from the show that made you wet (with tears) up close on the small-stage by an incredible cast of Broadway actors who thought they were auditioning to be in Season 2,” reads the description of the musical on its official website.
“Sporting a bop-infused score, scene-stealing cameos by characters like ‘Rose Landry’ and ‘Ilya’s Ass’, and time jumps absolutely no one can keep track of, audiences will find themselves hot, bothered, and probably saying, ‘….Girl!’ Because with love, sometimes it comes when you least expect it… and sometimes, it comes hands-free. So, grab a Canada Dry and join us for this hot and steamy romp!”
Now, there is a tiny catch for Canadians who might be excited to see the musical parody: it’s currently not slated to be performed in any Canadian cities. The show is starting off-Broadway for now, and you can only see it in New York City. We can only hope for a Canadian run one day.
Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody is scheduled to start performances May 12, and will be performed at The Club at 530 West 27th St. on the 6th floor in New York City.
