If you had just one day to show a visitor the best of southern Ontario, where would you take them?
According to a recent poll of thousands of voters, the answer is clear: Niagara Falls.
The iconic destination dominated the survey, capturing 55 per cent of the vote and leaving every other attraction far behind. Out of 2,739 votes cast, 1,507 people said Niagara Falls would be their first stop when showing a tourist around the GTA and surrounding region.
Coming in a distant second was Toronto’s most recognizable landmark, the CN Tower, which earned 33.1 per cent of the vote (907 votes).
The gap between the top two choices was striking. While the CN Tower remains one of Canada’s most famous attractions and a defining feature of Toronto’s skyline, voters overwhelmingly chose the natural wonder that has been drawing visitors from around the world for generations.
Far behind the leaders were two popular Toronto attractions. The Royal Ontario Museum received 168 votes (6.1 per cent), while the Toronto Islands attracted 157 votes (5.7 per cent).
The results highlight an interesting reality about tourism in the region. While Toronto is packed with world-class attractions, sporting events, restaurants and cultural experiences, Niagara Falls continues to hold a special place in people’s minds as the ultimate must-see destination.
It’s easy to understand why. The falls attract millions of visitors each year and remain one of the most recognizable natural landmarks on the planet. For many residents, it’s the kind of place that instantly leaves an impression, whether it’s a visitor’s first glimpse of the cascading water, a boat ride into the mist, or simply standing at the edge and taking in the view.
That doesn’t mean Toronto’s attractions are being overlooked. The CN Tower still secured one-third of all votes cast, proving it remains a top choice for introducing visitors to the city. Its observation decks offer some of the best views in the country and have become a rite of passage for many first-time visitors.
The lower-ranked finishers also have plenty of supporters. The Royal Ontario Museum remains one of Canada’s premier cultural institutions, while the Toronto Islands offer a quieter experience that many locals treasure for their beaches, bike paths and unmatched views of the downtown skyline.
Still, if this poll is any indication, GTA residents have a clear favourite when it comes to impressing out-of-town guests.
When visitors arrive and ask, “What’s the one place I absolutely have to see?” most people appear to have the same answer ready.
Take the drive to Niagara Falls.
