If Texas-style barbecue is what you crave, you can get a good sampling of it the rest of this month in Mississauga.
Until Nov. 30, Beach Hill Smokehouse has set up shop in the Food District of Square, and with it, a unique style of meats and sides prepared in the way of the American Southwest, but with a twist, courtesy of Toronto, where they have three locations.
“We’re bringing all that smoky goodness y‘all have been craving — authentic Texas BBQ, hearty sandwiches, and our legendary brisket poutine that’s got everyone talking,” say the pop-op operators.
Some of the traditional menu items prepared by Beach Hill include pork ribs, beef brisket, and smoked chicken.
Additionally, southern mac and cheese, smoked baked beans, deviled egg potato salad, and cornbread are available on the side.
What makes Texas-style barbecue unique is the focus on beef as opposed to pork (although pork is still on the menu), which is found in the styles from the Carolinas, Memphis and Kansas City.
But even in Texas, there are regional variations to the way the meat is prepared. As Beach Hill explains:
“In East Texas, you will find the meat is slowly cooked over hickory wood to the point that it falls off the bone. East Texas uses sweet sauces for a unique taste. In West Texas, the meat is cooked over direct heat with mesquite wood. In South Texas, like the Houston area, meats are accompanied by thick sauces that flavour the meat up just right. Central Texas barbecue focuses on high-quality meats rubbed with spices and cooked over indirect heat with pecan or oak wood.”
For the Square One appearance, Beach Hill is also introducing a new menu item.
The exclusive preparation for the Food District is the smoked beef brisket poutine, a fusion of crispy fries loaded with cheese curds, rich gravy, and the signature slow-smoked beef brisket.
“This is a premiere dish — you’ll be among the first to try this incredible creation that’s only available at our Square One pop-up,” Beach Hill announced through social media channels.
On Nov. 21 and Nov. 22, the beef brisket poutine goes BOGO — buy one and get one free.
