From Bobby Orr to Eric Lindros to John Tavares, the Oshawa Generals have boasted some exceptional players in their recent history.
This June they might get their hands on one more.
The Generals finished dead last in the league in a rebuilding year this season and played their 40 per cent chance at the number one selection in the Ontario Hockey League draft into a lottery win Thursday and will select first in the upcoming draft.
Brampton, Erie and Sarnia were also in the lottery.
“Winning the OHL Draft Lottery gives us a chance to close the book on a disappointing season and immediately move to the excitement for the franchise’s future,” said Oshawa Generals General Manager Roger Hunt. “This pick will result in a player who will come in and be an impact player and we couldn’t be more excited to get going in the 2026-27 season. Our fans deserve the best.”
The Oshawa Generals’ pick, whoever it might be, will add more high-end talent to tie into a young group that finished the season strong, with the club getting a chance to expedite their rebuild with the right selection at number one.
The last time they drafted #1 was 21 years ago when they selected Tavares, who was the first player granted ‘exceptional’ status by the league.
This year the team might have another one in Texas-born defenceman Kade O’Rourke, who is currently plying his trade with the Toronto Jr. Canadians in the OHL Cup – the end of season championship for triple ‘A’ hockey players in Ontario and the northern United States.
Will O’Rourke be given ‘exceptional’ status? The league hasn’t confirmed, though the decision is expected after the end of the tournament this weekend.
O’Rourke’s team is 4-0 after the round-robin, with playoffs to begin Thursday.
Kade O’Rourke wouldn’t be the first American player to go number one 1. But the first American to be granted exceptional status and first Type 1 diabetic? He certainly checks those boxes.
O’Rourke left Texas at 11 – he just turned 15 in January – to play against top talent in the GTHL and he is, in the view of many scouts who have watched the 6’1, 175 pound defenceman play, the best player available.
Called a “difference maker” by one OHL GM, O’Rourke has two goals and five points in round robin play in the OHL Cup and has lived up to his advance billing at every step of his journey.
Will that journey take him to Oshawa and Tribute Centre? Expect a decision on that front by Monday.
