It was 45 years ago that Terry Fox made his way through Brampton, and that visit is now marked with a lasting memorial.

Today (Oct. 10), a statue entitled Terry Fox: A Legacy of Hope was unveiled in Chinguacousy Park along the walking trail near the entrance of the stadium that also bears his name.

Designed by artist Christiano De Araujo, the monument features Terry Fox in the attire and shoes he wore during his run through Brampton. The base of the artwork depicts the landscapes and wildlife of his journey, with native plants and guiding animals symbolizing resilience. A circular pathway engraved with milestone markers invites visitors to explore the monument and learn more about his Marathon of Hope.

Fox visited Brampton on July 24, 1980, as part of his cross-country run to raise money for cancer research after he had his right leg amputated due to the disease.

The run ended after 143 when it was discovered that the cancer had returned to his lungs. Terry Fox died in June 1981. His name lives on through such memorials and for the annual Terry Fox Run, which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research worldwide.

The statue was created as part of Brampton’s public art strategy that emphasizes the city’s plan to integrate art into community spaces.

Fox was selected for the memorial as a lasting reminder of his dedication, courage and compassion.

“Terry Fox’s journey was about more than a run. It was about uniting people and raising awareness for a cause greater than oneself. This monument allows residents to connect with his story and be reminded of the impact one person can have on the world,” said Rowena Santos, Brampton Regional Councillor, Wards 1 and 5, at the unveiling.

The Fox family praised the memorial, saying it captures Terry’s courage, determination and compassion while reflecting the way he inspired and brought people together.
