Three beaches in Durham have been posted as unsafe for swimming due to elevated bacteria levels.

Beaverton Beach South on Lake Simcoe, Kinsmen Beach on Lake Scugog and Newcastle Beach on Lake Ontario have all been posted as unsafe for the week of July 26-August 1.

Elgin Pond in Uxbridge, Beaverton Beach North and Thorah Centennial Park on Lake Simcoe and seven Lake Ontario beaches – Frenchman’s Bay East and West (Pickering), Paradise Beach (Ajax), Lakeview Beach East and West (Oshawa) and Bowmanville Beach East and West have all been declared safe for swimming.

Durham Region health department staff test all 13 Durham beaches each week. The department reminds people not to swim for at least 48 hours after a heavy rainfall as bacteria levels can elevate due to run-off.
