Teen on house arrest for attempted murder charge arrested in gunpoint carjacking in Brampton

Police have arrested and charged a man from Toronto and a Brampton teen on house arrest for attempted murder and other charges following an armed carjacking in Brampton last week.

The carjacking happened around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday (July 23) at a residence in the area of Heritage Rd. and Embleton Rd. in Brampton.

Police say a woman parked her 2020 Mercedes Benz C300 in a driveway when she was approached by two males, one of which was armed with a gun.

The carjackers demanded the woman’s car and, fearing for her safety, police say she complied and the thieves took off in her vehicle and a second getaway car.

The second car was a 2022 Lexus RX35 which had also been reported stolen, and police say officers tracked the carjackers to the area of Wheatland Crt. and Loonlake Ave. in Mississauga.

But the carjackers spotted officers and took off in the stolen Mercedes at high speed. Police say the vehicle was again spotted in the area of Yonge St. and Sheppard Ave. in Toronto, and two males were arrested.

Tawayne Beckford, 19, of Toronto, and a 16-year-old from Brampton have been charged by police with multiple offences including robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent and possession of property obtained by crime.

While the identity of the 16-year-old cannot be released due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, police say the teen has a history of violent crimes and was bound by two release orders from previous charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and discharge firearm.

In both release orders, the teen had house arrest conditions and was prohibited from possessing weapons. The investigation is ongoing and police anticipate more charges could be laid.
