Counterfeit cash charges at Pickering City Centre

A Pickering teenager under court order not to be in possession of counterfeit currency has been charged with passing fake cash at a store at Pickering City Centre last month.

Police said the youth used counterfeit money to make a purchase at Shop401 in the mall on Feb. 5. Staff verified the money was fake while checking cash in the register a short time later.

Investigators were able to confirm the identity of the suspect and arranged for him to turn himself into police. Prior to his arrest, the accused was already bound by court orders not to be in possession of counterfeit currency or attend the Shops at Pickering City Centre shopping mall.

The teen was charged with fraud under $5,000, utter counterfeit currency and multiple counts of failing to comply with an undertaking and with release orders.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact D/Cst. Kane of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5371.
