Taxi driver has died in St. Catharines

A taxi driver who was found with critical injuries has died in the hospital, according to an update by Niagara Regional Police Services today (Sept. 27).

Police were called for an ambulance assist at 4:45 a.m. on Eastchester Ave. near Lorne St., on Sept. 23.

They found Niagara EMS and St. Catharines Fire Department workers already on the scene.

The 58-year-old victim had been driving a 2016 Toyota Corolla taxi parked nearby when a driver passing by found him unconscious on the road.

He was quickly transported to the hospital with critical injuries. Officers and the K9 Unit were brought to search the area but found nothing.

Police say, that it does not appear to be a robbery or a targeted incident.

“Prior to the time the cab was located by a passerby, the driver was considered status “available”, with no paying passenger,” NPRS stated.

Residents or businesses in the area with closed circuit security cameras, doorbell video cameras, or dash cameras are asked to review their footage for suspicious activity for the period between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Sept. 23.
