A beach in Scugog has been determined to be not safe for swimming because of high counts of bacteria.

Kinsmen Beach near Water St. and Mary St. is the area that local health officials are warning swimmers away from.

The warning comes from Durham Region Health Department which monitors the levels of E. coli along Lake Ontario and other water systems and beaches on a regular basis during the summer months.

E. coli can cause stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting and its detection also signals that other organisms that can cause health issues are present in the water.

The bacteria can be caused by sewage or animal waste in the water.
