Mississauga and Brampton residents are among the targets for a malicious text scam currently circulating.
The scam pretends to be an RBC Bank Alert, notifying the recipient that their account has been locked due to “suspicious activity.”
The message then provides a link for the recipient to login and verify their information. It looks like this:
RBC is warning its customers not to fall for this or other similar scams going around.
“Cyber criminals continue to send fraudulent SMS (text) messages masquerading as RBC. These texts are sent by fraudsters trying to trick people into providing personal or financial information,” says the bank.
“Be alert for any text messages claiming to be from RBC – particularly those asking you to log into your RBC accounts or appearing to require urgent attention.”
RBC customers and other banking customers who receive a text scam like the one above are advised not to reply to the message, click any links, or share any personal information.
Instead, contact your bank directly via their phone number or website to confirm any issues or questions related to your account.
