A Brampton man will have to find another way home after Guelph police say he was caught stunt driving while already driving with a suspended licence.

The Guelph Police Service says a 24-year-old Brampton man was stopped Thursday afternoon after a traffic officer spotted a van travelling at a high rate of speed on Wellington Street West near Hanlon Parkway.

Police say the vehicle was clocked by radar travelling 103 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone, resulting in a stunt driving investigation.

Under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, stunt driving refers to a range of dangerous driving behaviours, including excessive speeding. In this case, police allege the driver was travelling more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit in a zone where the limit was 80 km/h or less, which can result in a stunt driving charge.

Further investigation found the driver’s licence was already suspended. He was charged with speeding, stunt driving and driving while suspended.

As a result of the charges, the man’s licence was suspended for an additional 30 days and the van he was driving was impounded for 14 days.

A conviction for stunt driving carries a minimum one-year licence suspension, a minimum $2,000 fine and six demerit points.

The Guelph Police Service does not typically release the names of individuals charged with offences unless there are specific circumstances that make doing so necessary, such as an ongoing public safety concern. The man’s name was not released.

The incident was investigated by the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit.
