A suspect wanted on second-degree murder charges in both Peterborough and Oshawa surrendered to Peterborough Police Friday afternoon.

Michael Watterman, 44, whose address has been listed as both Oshawa and Peterborough, gave himself up after Peterborough Police’s Emergency Response Unit officers “became aware” he was in town and went to a residence at Dalhousie Street and Aylmer Street at 3 p.m. Friday.

Officers called out to the suspect and the man “exited the residence and surrendered to police,” police said.

Waterman is being held in custody and will appear in Weekend and Statutory Holiday court on Saturday.

Waterman was wanted on second degree murder charges in the December 6 death of a 33-year-old man in Peterborough.

Peterborough Police Investigative Services Unit and Belleville Police Tactical Team officers arrested 28-year-old Peter Pople of Peterborough in Belleville and charged him with second degree murder 12 days after the homicide, followed by an arrest in Peterborough the same day of 29-year-old Kaya Coughlin.

A warrant was issued for Waterman that day and five days later Durham Police also issued a warrant for his arrest after the stabbing death of Jeremy Russell, 44, in Oshawa, the ninth homicide in Durham Region this year.

Police responded to a 9-1-1 call Tuesday morning on Park Road, north of John Street after a passerby discovered Russell suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was taken to a Toronto trauma centre where he died from his injuries.

Nicholas Robbins, 33, was arrested Tuesday and has been charged with second degree murder. He was held for a bail hearing.

Waterman, Robbins and Russell are all known to each other, police said.
