A manhunt is underway for an unidentified suspect behind a mugging in Hamilton’s Gage Park.

Between 7:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Apr. 13, a man was near the Gage Park fountain near the city centre. The suspect approached the man and asked him for the time, Hamilton Police said. When the man pulled out his phone to check, the suspect tried to grab it.

The suspect hit the victim in the side of the head with an unknown object during the interaction. As the suspect tried to flee the scene, he dropped what witnesses described as a black handgun. He turned back to grab the gun before running off. He then got on a black BMX bike and rode away to the west of the park.

Police describe the suspect as a black man standing between five-foot-seven and six feet tall with an average build. He was wearing dark or black pants, and a red hoodie or jacket.

“Police are requesting assistance from the public in identifying the suspect along with any witnesses who may have observed the assault and/or captured it on video,” investigators said.

Anyone who witnessed the robbery can call Hamilton police at 905-546-2918.
