Police have identified the man they arrested last night after another man was murdered in his Whitby home earlier that day.

The victim was stabbed during a “domestic-related” incident on Regatta Dr in Whitby around 3:30 July 13. Durham Region Police responded shortly thereafter, finding the victim suffering life-threatening wound on arrival.

The victim was rushed to a Toronto trauma-centre where he succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile the suspect fled the house in a car. He was later tracked down to a trailer park in Kirkfield, a Kawartha Lakes village about 100 km north of Whitby.

Durham Police used their Air 1 helicopter to track the suspect down and with assistance from the OPP later arrested the man late last night.

Zachary Gibson, age 41 of Whitby has been charged with first degree murder.

Forensics investigators remain on scene collecting evidence of Durham Region’s tenth murder this year. Last year saw 12 people murdered throughout all of 2021.

Last year’s ninth and final homicide case, the shooting death of Franklin Owusu, didn’t come until December 27.
