A brief survey conducted by insauga.com through Instagram Stories reveals a sizeable majority does not want to change the name of Dundas St. in Mississauga.

The survey, conducted over a 24-hour period, had 254 respondents.

Replying to the question, “Should Mississauga rename Dundas St.?” 69 per cent of the people said “no” while 31 per cent said “yes.”

More than double of those who responded (176 voters) reject the idea compared to those (79 voters) who would like to see the name changed.

The survey was conducted after Mississauga City councillors recently voted in favour of studying the issue to see if a name change of Dundas St. is warranted. A report will also look at other names and places in Mississauga to determine if they are now politically incorrect or offensive to some.

Mississauga’s move follows that of the City of Toronto which has taken the steps to eliminate all references to Dundas from the urban landscape.

The Dundas name has come under scrutiny because the street is named after Scottish politician Henry Dundas who some say prolonged Britain’s involvement in the slave trade in the late 1700s.
