A Hamilton support worker has been charged after police allege she financially exploited a vulnerable senior over two years, withdrawing money directly from the victim’s bank account without authorization.
The investigation was led by the Hamilton Police Service Crimes Against Seniors Unit, following concerns about the financial well-being of a 76-year-old resident who required support care.
Police say the accused had been employed as a support worker for the senior when she allegedly accessed the victim’s bank account and removed funds over an extended period. Investigators determined the unauthorized withdrawals resulted in a total loss of approximately $6,600.
On June 25, 2026, police arrested Carla Grandin, 52, of Hamilton. She has been charged with:
- Fraud over $5,000
- Unauthorized possession of a credit card
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Grandin has been released from custody on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Police say the alleged fraud took place over a span of roughly two years, highlighting what investigators describe as a prolonged breach of trust involving a vulnerable victim in a care setting.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police are asking anyone who may have information related to the case or who may have had similar interactions with the accused to come forward.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Chris Gates of the Hamilton Police Service Crimes Against Seniors Unit at 905-540-5300. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.crimestoppershamilton.com.
Police have previously warned that financial exploitation of seniors can often go undetected for long periods, particularly when it involves individuals in positions of trust such as caregivers or support workers.
