The Salvation Army has set up a location where victims of last weekend’s fire in Mississauga left several families homeless.

Those in need can drop by and pick up free food, clothing, hygiene and household items at Cornerstone Community Church, 3020 Vanderbilt Rd. in Meadowvale If more support its needed vouchers to Salvation Army Thrift Stores will also be offered.

According to the Salvation Army, 12 households have been assisted so far at the location which will be open to offer assistance until June 17.

“We have seen so much community support. People have been dropping off donated  items such as bags of clothing. It has been truly amazing to see,” said Community and Family Services Director Joel Binner. “At the end of the day I had a huge smile on my face as I was so impressed with the work of our staff, volunteers and the  greater community.”

The fire, which occurred at 2869 Battleford Rd. near Glen Erin Dr., affected 36 units at the complex.

It is believed the fire started on a third floor balcony of one of the units and winds quickly spread the flames through the shared roof and attics.

Investigators have determined the fire is not suspicious which means they don’t think it was deliberate set. Still, they have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.

At least one GoFundMe campaign has started to assist a family.
