A new grocery store is set to open this summer in an older Mississauga plaza, bringing a supermarket back to a longtime retail site in the Clarkson community.

Food Basics will open its doors on Thursday, July 9, at Clarkson Village Shopping Centre on Lakeshore Road West.

The arrival of the grocery store marks a return of full-service supermarket shopping to the plaza, which has seen several retail changes over the years.

The store is moving into the former HomeSense space at 1865 Lakeshore Road West. The unit offers more than 24,000 square feet of retail space and is part of a shopping centre that includes several established tenants such as McDonald’s, Dollarama, Cobs Bakery and City Pizza.

Food Basics is one of Canada’s major discount supermarket chains and the value-focused grocery arm of Metro Inc. The company operates more than 140 locations across Ontario, including several in Mississauga.

Food Basics is known for its low-cost model, offering a limited but high-volume selection of products and weekly promotions under its “always more for less” approach.

The company has confirmed the new Clarkson store will not affect nearby operations, including another Food Basics location in Park Royal as well as a Metro grocery store within the Clarkson community.

Once open, the new store will restore grocery service to the Clarkson Village Shopping Centre, which previously housed a Dominion supermarket before it was repurposed for other retail uses in past years.

The opening adds another anchor tenant to the aging plaza as it continues to evolve alongside changes in the surrounding neighbourhood.
