Students ‘SOAR’ in Pickering to celebrate the achievements of Black women in Canada

Students at Pine Ridge Secondary in Pickering celebrated Black History Month with a seminar on leadership and overcoming barriers from seven of the most successful Black women in Canada.
The students, with guest students from Donald Wilson and Sinclair high schools in Whitby, GL Roberts in Oshawa and trustees from the Durham District School Board, gathered to SOAR – Sistahs Overcoming, Achieving and Rising – with a star-studded panel invited by the Graduation Coach for Black Student Program.
The seven women were among those recently nominated for the 100 Most Successful Black Women in Canada Award and were in attendance to acknowledge African Heritage Month and celebrate the achievement and excellence of African-Canadian women.

Guests responded to questions on leadership and how to handle barriers in the quest to be successful. Invited panelists include:

Panelist LaRain Veira shared her message with participants that ‘Mistakes Are Masterpieces in the Making,’ while Wright Grosvenor told the audience they were all “created with great purpose for a purpose.”
