U.S. trucker charged with impaired driving in Ontario.

An American truck driver whose vehicle got stuck in a drive-thru northwest of Ottawa early last Thursday morning didn’t even know he was in Canada when he was later charged with impaired driving, police say.

Ontario Provincial Police said officers working out of the Renfrew detachment received reports at about 5 a.m. that a truck had become stuck in a drive-thru in Cobden, a small community about 110 kilometres northwest of the nation’s capital.

“The vehicle had flat tires and the licence plate was from Vermont,” police said in a news release on Monday.

Officers who responded to the scene quickly found the damaged truck and its driver, police added.

“The driver didn’t know where they were and still believed they were in the United States,” OPP said.

Subsequent investigation by police determined the truck had earlier failed to stop, as required, at the Canada/U.S. border.

A 52-year-old man from Milton, Vermont is charged with operation while impaired (alcohol and drugs) and operation while impaired (blood alcohol concentration of 80-plus).

He was held for a bail hearing.
