A picture posted on Facebook of a Niagara Health EMS ambulance being shoveled out by St. Catharines firefighters created quite a stir.

The picture (above) showed St. Catharines firefighters from the Linwell Road Station digging out an ambulance stuck in the snow on McCordick Drive in the north end this morning (January 18).

Perhaps not mindful of the fact that St. Catharines got walloped with 50 cm (20 inches) – the amount the city usually accumulates over an entire month – the post drew the expected amounts of “Clear our roads” and “Why do I pay taxes” comments.

“Emergency crews can’t even get to us with the snow. Stop with the main roads and take care of the side streets,” said one poster. That lead another to note that if main roads aren’t cleared first, there’s nowhere for anyone to go.

That, in turn, lead to another response, noting, “I’m not saying that main roads aren’t important but what’s the point of an ambulance being able to get down a main road only to get stuck the minute they turn onto a side street?”

A poster sympathized with the plowing efforts. “It’s been a very long time since we’ve seen any significant snowfall, let alone this crazy amount!!”

But often one picture leads to another. It turned out a different ambulance got stuck on a side street in the wee hours, causing a person to post the below photo and note, “One was stuck in front of my home at 1 am. The tractor made a path on my drive for him to enter my street. But clearly it wasn’t wide enough.”
