Strong winds and “ping pong ball-size hail” in the forecast for Milton and Halton Hills

Environment Canada is warning Milton and Halton Hills residents to prepare for severe thunderstorms today (April 5).

Environment Canada says the storms are capable of producing wind gusts of up to 90 km/h and hail the size of ping-pong balls.

The storm could occur this morning and last until the afternoon.

The weather agency also says thunderstorms are developing over Michigan and are expected to track eastward into Ontario late this morning or this afternoon.

“As the Great Lakes are very cold, at this time, there is a great deal of uncertainty as to how strong these thunderstorms will be as they cross into Ontario. Should the cold temperatures of the lakes be overcome, a strong line of thunderstorms is expected with strong wind gusts and large hail,” the severe thunderstorm watch reads.

Thunderstorms are expected to move east of the area late this afternoon.

Environment Canada says strong winds and hail can damage property and even produce tornadoes.

Residents are advised to take cover immediately if they’re outside during a thunder and lightning storm.
