Peel Regional Police said in an update Saturday that 23-year-old Gurjeet Singh Virk of Erin, Ontario, turned himself in on July 9 after a warrant was issued for his arrest as part of Project Tail Light.
He is charged with breach of a release order, seven counts of theft of a motor vehicle, five counts of possession of break-and-enter instruments, theft over $5,000, two counts of theft under $5,000 and fraud under $5,000.
Virk was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
Project Tail Light was launched in May after investigators uncovered a series of vehicle thefts and attempted thefts inside underground parking garages in the area of Hurontario Street and Burnhamthorpe Road East. Police said several vehicles were stolen, while others were damaged during attempted thefts.
Search warrants executed at homes in Mississauga and Erin led to the seizure of several cellphones, key fobs, key-programming devices, vehicle-related documents and approximately $1,465 in cash believed to be proceeds of crime.
On June 26, police announced that Prince, 21, of Mississauga was charged with 22 criminal offences in connection with the investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue analyzing evidence seized during the searches and pursuing additional leads to identify anyone else who may have been involved.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Peel Regional Police’s 12 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-453-2121 ext. 1233.
