Storm Update: Snow day for some as Durham buses cancelled; schools remain open

Snow Day!
At least for some students in Durham as buses in all zones as residents, business people and snow clearing staff dig themselves out of yesterdays storm.
All schools, however, remain open.
Official numbers have not been released but most of the region was dumped with 15-20 cm of snow. Combined with high winds driving was treacherous Wednesday night and Durham Region Police were warning people to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
The scene for students trying to get home from school Wednesday afternoon was chaotic as bus service was in place in the morning but the rapidly accumulating snow forced the cancellation at least 20 routes in the Brooklin area and 13 routes in Clarington while every other route was delated from 10 minutes to 45 minutes.
People woke up to the job of clearing their driveways Thursday morning and city and regional staff as well as numerous private contractors got to work clearing the roads and parking lots so life can resume in the region.

Both Durham Student Transportation Services and Student Transportation Services Central Ontario (responsible for school bus service in Clarington and parts east) made the decision Thursday morning to cancel all service due to the inclement weather.
Meanwhile, the storm knocked out power Wednesday night in as many as 5,000 homes in Ajax and an undetermined number of residences in Pickering and Whitby, as well as 562 homes in Oshawa were without electricity.
Elexicon Energy said Power was still out in about 250 homes in Pickering late last night but has since been restored. All outages in Oshawa have been resolved, according to Oshawa Public Utilities.
