Two people have been charged and a stolen ride was recovered thanks to the help of licence plate reader tech in Caledon, police say.
The arrests happened on Monday while the OPP says officers were patrolling on Kennedy Road in the Southfields Village area of Caledon.
Police say they got a hit off the police cruiser’s Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system, also known as a licence plate reader or scanner.
The system alerted officers to a stolen vehicle which was later located at a residence on Valleyscape Trail.
Two suspects aged 27 years old and a 31 years old were arrested. Police say they searched the home later that day and found an automobile master key during the raid.
The OPP says the investigation has led to charges against Samardeep Brar, 27, of no fixed address, and Navreen Dhaliwal, 31, of Brant County. Both have been charged with possessing automotive master key and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Brar has also been charged with two counts of fail to comply with probation order.
The accused were held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville, police say.
Licence plate readers are a relatively new tool for Ontario law enforcement agencies and have assisted officers seize over 11 pounds of cannabis in Brampton, and catch a Brampton resident driving without a permit.
The City of Brampton has been pushing to integrate more APLR technology into its traffic and speed camera system, including 360-degree video cameras.
